For the seventh year in a row, the Science Olympiad team from Bedford Middle School won Connecticut’s state championship over the weekend, earning them a spot at the national competition in May.

“The sustained success of the BMS Science Olympiad team reflects the commitment of our learning community to both high-quality instruction in our classrooms and motivation by our students to participate in extracurricular activities,” said Daniel Cortright, Science teacher, BMS.  “We are so proud of everyone who participated.”

The team of 29, which includes three eligible Staples High School freshmen, participated in 23 events across topics that could include anatomy and biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, geology, mechanical and structural engineering, and technology. Some events include test-taking while others involve hands-on labs or building and then bringing a device to the competition.

Westport participation at the state championships also included two Staples seniors, PJ Loranger and Anna Luo, who had attended BMS previously and served as judges at the competition.

The Science Olympiad National Championship will be held at Michigan State University on May 24-25 and will bring together 120 teams from across the country and an ambassador team from Japan, representing a total of 2,000 students.

The list of participating students is below. The names in bold are current SHS 9th graders who are former BMS students. Please congratulate the students for their effort. They represented BMS and Westport well!
